Soldier - Seismic Sounds

Let it not be said Beyonce and producer Darkchild introduced the military beats into r&b. Military parade-type snares drive the beats of this British record, over which Kyra sings up her soldier, a strong, respectful beau. Lovemore and Sparrow respond respectively using r&b singing and reggae toasting to declare their statuses as soldiers.

Nice laid back R'n'B at odds with it's military overtones from new vocalist Kyra, with support from Jamaican deejay Sparrow on the chorus. An army drum backbeat works pretty well, sounding a bit similar to the speeded up version at the start of 'Lose My Breath', only problem being the tempo's a bit too mid-paced to dance to, perhaps a march might be more in order?

Soldier - Seismic Sounds
*** (3 stars)
Soldier is the debut release from Seismic Sounds, a new collective in urban entertainment. Kyra takes up the spot of lead vocalist, her voice complimented by London born singer - songwriter Lovemore, and dancehall roots man Sparrow, who has been laying down tracks for the last four years on both sides of the Atlantic as well as back home in JA. A subtle military beat is woven with a catchy bassline, and the vocalists' verses, written independently of each other, have been combined to make for a potent concoction of RnB and ragga. Although this all sounds quite tried and tested, with their debut compilation The Alpha out soon, it'll be interesting to see how 2005 maps out for Seismic Sounds.
